This latest edition of the bamboo beauty features even more wood accents than before with bamboo surrounding the touchpad, as well as the bamboo facade. The bamboo is also blonder now. Asus reps teased us that this, too, was just a prototype and that the design may well change again before its release in 2008.Its case is covered in bamboo, which I suppose is a statement, but the real show is inside. All of the plastic in it is labeled and recyclable; it is lined with cardboard; there are no paints, sprays or even electroplating used on its components. It looks like it is designed to be easily taken apart for self-service and easy upgrading of components, usually the downfall of notebooks.

The organic tactility, refreshing scent and minimalist aesthetics of bamboo lend the ASUS Bamboo Series notebook an arresting aura of spirituality, warmth and old world charm that synthetic materials and cold, impersonal metals will struggle to replicate. With every touch, users will be able to feel the difference – the bamboo gives an instant sense of familiarity, just like the sensation one would get from running one’s fingertips across furniture. The sensation of being close to nature is even conveyed when users use the touch pad. The genuine bamboo fiber patterns on the touch pad create the sensation of touching live bamboo. Furthermore – like any piece of original art – every ASUS Bamboo Series notebook is unique, each with its own natural patterning that is brought out beautifully by ASUS’ proprietary manufacturing process.

Apparently, the first few 12-inch models will go on sale at Taiwan’s IT Month exhibition on Saturday, where they’ll run NT$59,900, or just over $1,800. Unfortunately, it’s not clear exactly which configuration that’ll get you, but, judging from the last word out of ASUS, even the base config seems to be pretty capable.
