Toshiba Satellite A665-S6057 offers great performance for the money. The i5 processor is more than enough power for most users. Between the graphics and the i5, the machine is capable of playing the new 4K super high-resolution YouTube videos without a hitch, and I haven’t seen any lag resulting from having multiple applications open at the same time. There are faster computers out there, but at this price, the performance is excellent. Price for $899.99 from Toshiba.

They don’t sound as good as any halfway decent 2.1 speaker system, but they do not have the "tin" sound that many laptops have. So for listening to music while working, watching videos, or listening to NPR news updates, they do a great job.

I do like Toshiba Satellite A665-S6057 display. It’s not as good as those that come with MacBook Pro, but it is sufficient for viewing photos, videos, etc., and just big enough for it to be acceptable to tile two windows side by side. This machine also has both VGA and HDMI output for external displays, but I haven’t yet connected this to my desktop display. It’s worth noting that the 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium install that comes on this laptop works out of the box.

Toshiba libretto W105-L251 is shipping in 2-3 weeks (as of Aug. 16, 2010). The U5400 processor is a dual-core, ULV model and the RAM is DDR3 albeit at 800Mhz. It is completely out in both Amazon and Toshiba Direct, but if you want you can get one in ebay for $1500.

Toshiba Satellite T235D-S1345 has very good wifi, decent speakers, very useful mouse track and specially comfortable keyboard. Yes it does come with a lot of bloatware but its manageable. Great battery and found it $100 less on office max. Now my concern, GRAPHICS. Yes it has a decent radeon hd 4225 that supposedly delivers very good youtube vids, unfortunately it lags on 360p youtube video. Also it has a very high contrast and can’t find where to lower it. Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5066 is actually closer to a 14" screen than a 15.6 screen. Brightness is a little low. Trackpad is good. DVD drive is useful as well. Only 600 bucks for a machine of this caliber was very much better than the 11.6 subnotebook I was looking at. Battery life I guess, but not really a con for me as I don’t need to use it unplugged for very long. Price for $579.83 from Amazon.

Toshiba Satellite T235D-S1350 13.3" display and 3.9 pound total weight is an excellent balance between capability versus transportability. The Toshiba Satellite T235D-S1350 description incorrectly lists the battery rating at 48Wh – it is actually a much more capable 61Wh. The included software allows tailoring of "eco" settings to achieve extended battery use. Based on standard usage, my son has achieved 5-6 hours of actual use (rated at 8+ hours). Only significant negative is the lack of Bluetooth, as a standard wireless mouse requires one of the three USB ports. The combo eSATA/USB port is a nice bonus for future growth.

Toshiba Satellite A665D-S6059 LED Keyboard is beautiful and can be kept on a timer or left on or off all the time. ATI Mobility 5650 is DX11 and plays games extremely well. The video, after mucking about for a few minutes, was properly switchable to my Acer 1400 X 1050 monitor. Battery life is only around 2 hours. Fan blows out lots of hot air but keeps bottom and keyboard cool.
