Don’t buy the M4400. Mine was defective. Had to get a new hard drive which was going to replace the bad one. The tech arrived late. The new drive didn’t load all of the software I had originally ordered. It looks cool but stay away untill Dell gets its act together on this one.

I had high expectations from Dell Precision M4400—a high-end laptop which costs $2k. Got many extras including the RGB-LED display, 4Gb ram, bluetooth, 802.11N data card, 500Mb HDD. Have some big disappointments:
* After a month speaker-tops peeled off! The speaker tops constitute ~30% of area (a large area!) next to keyboard. The laptop looks horrible once the display is up.
* Display brighness & color is very non-uniform (became more so after I calibrated the display). Sides of the screen have a red color shade. This nearly nulls the reason why I bought the high end display (photo post-processing).
* Have major wireless LAN issues. Everytime the laptop comes back from standby, I have to manually disable/enable wireless to get connectivity back.
* Laptop used to crash with blue screen every once in a while. Problem is gone after I updated the graphics-card driver. Going through this & finding the reason was a _big_ pain.
* Laptop/pointer freezes for 1-2 seconds a while after I get back from standby. Very irritating. Suspect bluetooth is causing it. Couldn’t isolate the reason yet.
Very poorly made laptop. Stay away from it, despite all the good things.
Very poor quality. Made in Malaysia. Several M4400’s less than 2-4 weeks old were already replaced by Dell after failing to fix a host of issues. (i.e. Heat / Failure to charge battery over 50% / Monitor bezel cracked after minimal usage / Bezel warped / Color issues mentioned above. STAY AWAY from any “good deals on this one”
I too have the LAN issue of wireless. My temp solution keep it pluged into wired network.
I also have runaway processes from Dell drivers. Their suggestion is to downgrade driver and/or reboot. The runaway processes eat up 45-60% of CPU on both cores. What a great way to burn in a CPU…NOT…
