Gateway NV5929u feels sturdy, the screen has little play in it and stays firmly in place to wherever you open it. It looks sleek, is really thin and pretty light. This thing is fast. The i5-430M is an excellent chip. DDR3 is the newest type of RAM and it’s still really expensive. 320gb 5400rpm hard drive is plenty of space. With a 15.6 inch screen you can still enjoy blu ray movies. It will play blu ray movies at 1080p. Windows 7 Home is pre-loaded. It’s better than Vista. Gateway NV5929u is a best laptop for the price plus bluray.

  1. I could never buy a Gateway. If I was going to go ultra-cheap, I would probably choose Acer. Has anyone had a great, long-term experience with Gateway?

  2. I have had a good long-term experience.
Our first desktop my wife and I bought in a long time (granted, was several years ago) worked very well for us.

Also, a friend mentions PCWorld laptop ratings came out (based on customer complaints), and Gateway was number 4/10, right below Acer, which was #3.

It seems like Acer and Gateway laptops are very similar machines.

  3. I have owned 6 Gateway’s, Three desktops and 3 notebooks. All have been workhorses and troublefree. My main CPU is a Gateway 500 that we have had for 10 years without a glitch. All I’ve done is add memory, a larger hard drive, and a 2.0 usb pci card. Unfortunately it is upgraded to the max and has some challenges with the current generation of apps. Before Gateway we had an Acer that was fairly reliable. Since Acer now owns Gateway I’m a little apprehensive since tech and customer support has reportledly gone down since Acer took full control.

Ryan, you are a moron. Acer owns and operates Gateway, and has done so for about three years now.
